Chess Club
Chess club in St. Patrick’s has been going from strength to strength every year. In St. Patrick’s there is a strong emphasis on fun and enjoyment when playing chess.
The benefits of playing chess are well documented and include many social and cognitive benefits.
Social Benefits
- Learning to win with grace and accept loss. Chess etiquette promotes good sportsmanship.
- Developing impulse control: Playing chess teaches children to consider the consequences of their actions.
- Mental resilience and confidence: Learning a new skill can help build confidence and learning from one’s losses helps to develop mental resilience.

Every year, St. Patrick’s chess club takes part in the online ‘Lá Fichille’ tournament, the day long in person ‘Féile Fichille’ tournament while also running an in school competition where the boys play in order to find our St. Patrick’s chess champion.
Chess club runs after school on a Tuesday and/or Wednesday depending on numbers. It is available for boys in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class.
